Wishing You a Happy Healthy New Year!

Happy New Year to all of you, especially to all those of you who are hoping to quit smoking in 2008. I wish you the very best of luck, and a happy and healthy 2008.

Many people have made quitting smoking their New Year Resolution, but your likelihood of managing to remain free from cigarettes will depend upon the support and treatment that you receive, with those who receive some form of help being far more likely to succeed.

The good news is that the help is out there, so make sure that you access it.

For those of you in the UK try the free NHS Smoking Helpline: 0800 169 0 169. Wherever you are, putting the word “Quit” into your search engine will bring up your local organisation that can offer you help, advice and support in the process of giving up cigarettes.

For those of you living in England, one good thing about giving up smoking for 2008 is that now you have the smoking ban to help you – this will be the first full year that England is smoke free.

Given that you have stopped smoking for the New Year, lets think about some of the benefits, as this will surely motivate you. Between two weeks and three months of stopping you will find that your circulation improves, walking becomes easier, and lung function increases.

The worst of nicotine withdrawal symptoms, such as craving a cigarette, feeling edgy and uncomfortable, subside within the first month, and also nicotine replacement such as patches will help you get over this.

In future posts I will be talking about the clear health benefits of giving up, and also about acupuncture, shiatsu, neurolinguistic programming and counselling – how they can help you to give up, as well as doing some book reviews of books that you might find helpful.
