More tips on giving up
As well as setting a definite day to quit smoking, and following the advice given in my previous post, it is also a good idea to attend your local smoking cessation clinic, where you will be given advice about the best form of nicotine replacement for you, if you need it.
Another handy strategy is to join a group of other people who are trying to stop smoking – this form of group therapy will strengthen your determination no end, and it is much better to do something with other people than to struggle on your own. Strength in numbers!
Ask people who have given up how they eventually managed it – it’s amazing the stories that people come out with, and you might pick up some more useful tips. One lady I knew told me that she managed to give up cigarettes by returning to the childhood habit of sucking her thumb! It may sound a bit silly, but it worked. One man in his thirties said that it was simply the prospect of becoming ill that helped him to stop – he hated hospitals and going to the doctor, so he realised that giving up smoking was a good way of avoiding the things he disliked, and this thought gave him the motivation to quit. Another man found that simply chewing gum, any kind of gum, helped him to stop, as every time he fancied a cigarette he just had the gum instead, and the chewing took his mind off the cigarettes.
Finally, in view of one of my previous posts on exercise, start an exercise program on the very day that you plan to give up – it really does help!
