Quit - the UK charity that helps people to stop smoking

Quit is the independent UK charity whose aim is to save lives by helping smokers to stop. They offer a helpline for smokers wanting to quit, (it’s 0800 00 22 00, if you’re interested). One of Quit’s greatest resources is its website, which is completely devoted to stopping smoking, and provides a wealth of advice on how to go about it.

The website advertises Quit’s free pamphlets on how to give up, including one which is written specifically for women.

The website includes special sections for young people and pregnant women. The section aimed at young people has some pretty arresting videos – take a look at Sexiness in a Stick! Did you ever think smoking was cool? You won’t after you’ve seent this - it really highlights the lack of glamour in cigarettes.

Quit has resources for teachers and students, including useful ideas for teachers on how to do sessions that highlight the risks to health of smoking.

The site includes success stories of people who have managed to give up the habit, such as Jennifer of Derby who regards two of the greatest achievements of her life as giving up smoking and having children.

The site even has Keep Quit, an exercise programme for smokers who want to quit. Exercise is a known factor in helping people come off the cigarettes.

Quit emphasise the importance of motivation and support in giving up smoking, and even offer email counselling.

As a charity, they have charity shops throughout Britain which serve the dual purpose of fund raising, as well as being a handy place to pick up Quit’s useful smoking cessation literature.

Quit are doing a great job in helping people to give up.
